Optimism, the Layer 2 network, recently made an upgrade to its testnet on April 25, as reported by Offchain Labs. Prior to this upgrade, Offchain Labs had discovered two significant vulnerabilities and brought them to Optimism’s attention at least two weeks ago. The vulnerabilities have since been patched. However, Offchain Labs, Optimism’s rival, acknowledged that these challenges were not easy to overcome.
The first issue brought to Optimism’s attention was related to the OP Stack fraud-proof mechanism, which had the potential to be tricked into accepting a false chain history. The second issue involved an exploiter being able to prevent the system from accepting a valid chain history. These vulnerabilities raised concerns about the possibility of malicious actors manipulating the chain’s history and executing subtle attacks.
To address these concerns and prevent similar attacks in the future, Optimism implemented timer-handling code as part of the upgrade. The goal of this upgrade is to enhance the security of their networks and prevent censorship and traitor attacks from succeeding.
In recent news, Optimism has emerged as a leading protocol, surpassing other established industry leaders like Polkadot and Cardano, based on developer activity and 7-day net flows. Despite being relatively new, having been live for only two years, Optimism has gained significant traction. Additionally, while the total-value-locked (TVL) continues to rise steadily, there has been a recent surge in the number of core developers and Github contributions, according to DefiLlama.
