Vitalik Buterin Commends TiToks AI Compression Technology for Blockchain Integration

The innovative image compression technique greatly reduces picture size, making it more feasible to save on the blockchain.
TiTok, a new image compression method created by researchers from ByteDance and the Technical University Munich, has received approval from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin for its promising blockchain applications. The TiTok compression technique significantly decreases picture size, making it easier to store on the blockchain—however, it should not be confused with the social networking app TikTok.
During an appearance on Farcaster, a decentralized social media platform, Buterin highlighted TiTok’s blockchain potential by stating, “320 bits is essentially a hash. Small enough to be included on the chain for each user.” This breakthrough could have significant implications for NFTs and the storage of digital images, such as profile pictures (PFPs).
Using Machine Learning and Advanced AI technology, researchers from ByteDance and the Technical University Munich developed TiTok, a method that compresses high-quality images into 32 bits. A 256×256 pixel image can be compressed into “32 discrete tokens” through the use of sophisticated AI image compression, as outlined in the TiTok research report.
Additionally, the TiTok framework eliminates grid constraints found in traditional 2D tokenization methods, allowing for more flexible and compact images in one dimension (1D). To tokenize images, TiTok utilizes machine learning and advanced AI in transformer-based models.
Furthermore, the technique identifies and utilizes redundant information in different parts of the image to reduce the overall data size of the final result; this is known as area redundancy. The research suggests that TiTok’s “compact latent representation” can surpass traditional techniques in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.
The groundbreaking AI-driven image compression approach has gained recognition from Ethereum co-founder, emphasizing TiTok’s blockchain potential.
