US SEC’s May 12 Roundtable to Address Tokenization and Decentralized Finance (DeFi)

SEC will explore the future of tokenization on May 12.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is preparing for a high-profile roundtable on May 12, bringing together leaders from BlackRock, Nasdaq, Fidelity, Robinhood, and more to discuss tokenization and decentralized finance (DeFi). Hosted at the SEC’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., the event, titled “Tokenization — Moving Assets Onchain: Where TradFi and DeFi Meet”, will also be livestreamed for public access.

Wall Street leaders join the dialogue on DeFi and blockchain.

SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce described tokenization as a potential game-changer for financial markets and expressed her anticipation of hearing how the SEC might best approach this evolving space.

Tokenization: The Next Evolution of Finance

The conference will explore how blockchain-based systems can modernize traditional finance (TradFi) by enabling on-chain asset movement. The event is set to feature two major panel discussions:

  • Capital Markets 2.0 led by Jeff Dinwoodie (Cravath)
  • The Future of Tokenization hosted by Tiffany Smith (WilmerHale)

These panels will explore actual use cases, market development, and likely regulatory impacts. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins will provide the keynote speech, highlighting the agency’s dedication to encouraging innovation while protecting investors.

Big Players, Bold Ideas

Top executives from financial giants such as BlackRock (Robert Mitchnick), Fidelity (Cynthia Lo Bessette), Nasdaq (Eun Ah Choi), and Invesco (Will Geyer) will take the stage. Franklin Templeton, Apollo Management, and Blockchain Capital will provide additional insights.

The event also signals a broader push by the SEC to embrace a collaborative approach toward crypto regulation, as seen in prior roundtables on crypto classification, trading, and custody.
